Florence is petite - slender and only a couple of inches over five feet tall. She has long blonde hair and pale blue eyes - both from her mother. She dresses rather conservatively, mostly in muted colors. Not pastels, they're too dark for that, but muted grays, blues, greens, and browns. She has a very beautiful smile, when she chooses to smile.

How many women would drive themselves crazy
By arguing over a game of chess?

Florence Vassey is a talented 36-year-old chess player. She was born in Hungary, and was separated her from her family at age five when the Soviets sacked Budapest. She was raised in an orphanage in England, where she was not mistreated or overly ignored. She started playing chess as an extracurricular activity when she was 10, and really excelled. She played her first professional match when she was 19, and continued to play from there. She was never the best, but she was good enough to live (most of the time) off of her winnings.

When she was 27, she met a rising chess star named Freddie Trumper, and when she was 28, he asked her to be his second at his first World Chess Championship. He won. The two were together for seven years, most of that time in a romantic relationship as well as a professional one. When she was 33 and Freddie was 34, Florence gave birth to a baby girl, Molly Trumper. Two months later, they woke to find Molly dead in her crib, a victim of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. After that, their relationship started to deteriorate, and by the time Freddie was defending his title for the second time (not counting the rematch in the Phillipines the year after he first won the title) in Merano, Italy, they were only still together because Florence had nowhere else to go. After Freddie lost, Florence left him, driven away by his attitude, his habit of blaming her for everything, and his unwillingness to take responsibility for anything bad.

She was, for about ten months, in a relationship with Anatoly Sergievsky - the new world chess champion and a Russian who defected from the Soviet Union. Freddie was, understandably, not happy with that situation, but Florence didn't care. She had fallen rather in love with Anatoly. He asked her to be his second when Freddie challenged him a year after the original match, and she accepted. Freddie won the rematch and Anatoly returned to the Soviet Union, and though Freddie tried to win Florence back, she'd have none of it. So she was left alone.

This was six months ago. She is currently living in her old neighborhood (from before she and Freddie became lovers) in London.

Florence's room in the inn is simple - sandy-white walls, pale faded blue and sandy-white bedspread, sheets, and pillows. The bed is a honey-stained oak four-poster. She has a fireplace, a bookshelf (with wood that matches the bedframe), a couple of squishy chairs, and a side table with a chess board. The bathroom has a shower and an old-fashioned claw footed tub, and a dressing table with mirrors.
